Personality & Traits

Strengths, Weaknesses, and Quirks +Lifelong learner. Eager to learn about the latest technology.
+Physically fit and strong.
+A very good listener.
+Skilled artist

-Misses his family. He’d hoped one of his siblings might enlist, but none of them did.
-Not very good at multitasking.
-Lacks confidence in his command abilities.
Ambitions Nick originally lacked any ambition for command, content to run his engine room. But as the number of starships increased rapidly, the number of trained commanders did not increase in a commensurate way. When Starfleet asked him to step up to take on the XO role, he did with pride, though remains uncertain it was a good decision.
Hobbies, Interests, Likes, and Dislikes Though he knows it’s a cliché, Nick loves nothing more than reading his technical journals. He also spends a lot of time in the ship’s gym facilities.

He is immensely proud of his Martian heritage, wearing the flag of Mars on personal clothing and accessories. He is always happy to talk of his homeland.

Nick loves to draw. He began with technical schematics, but discovered he was good at drawing landscapes and people as well. He keeps a large book of paper in his cabin (which he takes on shore leave) and a small notebook that he keeps on his person at all times.

Personal History Nicholas Malcolm Kincaid was born on Valentine’s Day, 14 February, 2133 in Ares City on Mars. Mars’s first permanent human settlements were made in 2103, and wave after wave of colony ships persisted over the following years. Nick’s parents, James and Nasira Kincaid, first arrived on Mars in 2131 as newlyweds, and were among the first 100 to settle the newly-constructed Ares City, which would become the planet’s capital. Two years later, they brought Nick into the world, and by 2140, Nick has a brother and two sisters.

It didn’t take long for the Martian settlers to realize that the planet’s lower gravity was affecting their children. The entire first generation of Martian kids were on average eight inches taller than what was typical of Earth. Many were thin and lanky, but Nick refused to be like them. Ever since learning about the growing space fleet, Nick wanted to join, but he knew that their physical requirements were difficult for a typical Martian child to fit. So he spent as much free time as possible in the gym building his frame. By the time he was fourteen years old, no one would guess he was Mars-borne.

In 2147, his class got a tour of the prototype antimatter reactor at Argyre Planitia, which almost single-handedly inspired Nick’s interest in starships engineering. Always interested in going to space, now he had a course. In high school, he studied as hard as he could about physics, maths, and technology. While not the top student of his class, one of his teachers saw potential in him and managed to put him in touch with a United Earth Stellar Navy commander who was stationed in orbit. The commander was impressed with the boy and sponsored his application to the UESN academy in San Francisco, Earth.

After four years of intense learning, during which he fought hard to acclimate to Earth standard gravity, he graduated and became an Engineering Officer, first sent to the Pioneer-class UES Sentinel. Its fusion-powered warp core was slow and much less interesting to Nick than the matter/antimatter reactors he’d seen in school, but being able to work directly on it was no less exciting.

A year later, on 13 March 2156, the United Earth officially declared war on the Romulan Star Empire, following the latter’s attack on Station Salem One. The Sentinel was sent to war, and though it survived encounters with Romulan ships on ten separate occasions, in January 2157 it was destroyed while trying to return to Deneva Colony for resupply. Nick survived, his escape pod reaching Deneva, and he was reassigned to the Bison-class transport UES Aldebaran. That ship returned to Earth over the course of a year carrying raw materials from Deneva and survivors from various UE ships.

After taking some leave with his family on Mars, none of whom enrolled in the UESN (though sister Hana worked in the Utopia Planitia shipyard), Nick spent six months learning everything there was to know about matter/antimatter reactors. He became an expert, capable even of teaching their functions to the next generation of engineers. He was promoted and sent back to the frontlines in an M/AM powered subspace transmitter ship, the UES Bell. Given the strategic importance of long-range communications, the Bell was well protected and survived to the end of the war. He often loaned himself to other ships that had been damaged by Romulans to help with repairs.

After the Battle of Cheron, he was reassigned as Assistant Chief Engineer to a much smaller vessel, the Comet-class UES Nebula, which was his first time serving on a proper explorer. When United Earth was folded into the Federation and the UESN became Starfleet, Nick transitioned with them.

Three years later, Nick was promoted again and became Chief Engineer aboard the Powhatan-class USS du Pont, a long-range escort vessel that kept the space lanes safe from pirates, raiders, and alien races who would reduce the Federation’s influence in deep space. However, the older ship, while M/AM powered, annoyed him after he got used to the new design parameters of the Comet-class. He longed for another promotion, but would not get one for five years, until 2168, when he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and offered the position of Chief Engineer and First Officer about the Daedalus-class USS Horizon.
