Personal History | The colony world of Adisi Nineveh was established in the twenty-first century by a group of refugees fleeing western Asia and the Balkan regions during the period between the Eugenics Wars and World War III. The original colonists arrived at Adisi Nineveh in a small flotilla of DY-100A sleeper ships (a modified version of the original DY-100, capable of pseudo-continuous acceleration, as well as equipped with photon sails). The flotilla was ostensibly assembled and modified in Earth Orbit by a Hedge Fund Group speculating on the profitability of asteroid mining. In reality, the flotilla was funded and arranged by Nadia Dashinsky (a designer of a method to securely buy and sell on the internet), Yanis Demetrios (a bioengineer with several very profitable patents) and Maryam Ansam (founder and chairperson of SpaceTech, a private aerospace manufacturer and space transportation services company). In reality, the three had seen the writing on the wall, and planned to use the ships to transport a group of highly educated professionals and their families who were having to fleet the expanding wartorn area. In the end, approximately five hundred men, women and children were transported on the ships, as well as enough frozen genetic material to ensure that any potential colony would be diverse enough to be viable. Ms. Abram's top research and developer, Donald Hudson, theorized the existence of what he called "tachyon eddies", temporary streams of tachyons which could be detected and exploited for faster than light travel, drastically shortening travel time between systems. (In three hundred and fifty years, it would be discovered that time eddies could be relatively permanent structures, as they were discovered to be in the Bajoran system). Which meant that a colonization effort that could have taken decades, or even centuries to accomplish, was managed instead in years. So with a combination of cutting edge technology and luck, the refugees arrived at an Earth-like planet twenty-four light years away. Adisi Nineveh proved to be remarkably similar to Earth. The years were a few day longer, the seasons milder, and the gravitational constant a little higher, but the days were roughly the same length and the climate agreeable to the new arrivals. Native plants were cultivated along with seeds brought from Earth, and a few local animals were easily domesticated as well. When the burgeoning Earth Starfleet "discovered" Adisi Nineveh more than a century later, they found a thriving human colony with a solid technological base ready to re-establish contact with their long lost Terran sisters and brothers. Kiana Pahlavi was born on Nowruz (a New Year tradition brought from Earth, and observed on the colony's vernal equinox), in the community of Ecbatana, which serves as the Adisi Nineveh's technological and educational center. The oldest of four children, both her parents are instructors at the Dashinsky Technological Institute. Like most children on Adisi Nineveh, Adisi grew up under an education system based on the Ancient Greek system of paideia, as well as the four Stoic principles introduced into the initial education system of the Colony: Sophia, Andreia, Dikaiosyne and Sophrosyne (Wisdom, courage, justice and temperance). To this end, children on Adisi Nineveh are expected to be schooled in both the liberal arts and scientific disciplines, as well as maintain a healthy lifestyle and physical regimen. When Kiana Pahlavi was six years old, the arrival of a United Earth Starfleet ship changed the history of the colony. It certainly changed Kiana's life. The world that had been tearing itself apart when her ancestors had left it, had not only united itself, but had discovered a way to overcome the relativistic limits of the speed of light. And with the arrival of an Earth ship, the whole universe opened itself up to Adisi Nineveh. At the age of fifteen, a year before she would attend the two years of Stoapoikile, Adisi Nineveh was visited by the USS Atlantis, an NX-class starship, the thought of a starship that could travel at Warp 5 to places all over the galaxy was mind-boggling. After completing her two years of Stoapoikile, her friends and family expected Kiana to attend the Dashinsky Technological Institute. With her interest in space, most expected her to be involved in the mining of the system's asteroid belt, or possibly the now booming space industry that was centered around the traffic arriving by Earth Cargo Services and freighters from other species. Instead Kiana applied for, and was accepted, to Starfleet Academy. It came as a shock not only to her family, but to other citizens of the colony. Even though Adisi Nineveh had embraced the re-establishment of ties with Earth, and discovering other sentient species, most people expected that the basic core of life on Adisi Nineveh to continue as it always had. No one expected someone to leave the system. Terran advances had been introduced to Adisi Nineveh, and the colony shared its own innovations in return. But to have a child of the colony world want to leave for Earth and its Starfleet was inconceivable. For Kiana Pahlavi, it was a dream come true. Granted, she found the lifestyle of her fellow humans from Earth "unstructured" (to put it diplomatically), but the ways the arts and sciences had developed was incredible. And to see those points on Earth that she had only read about growing up...was something she hadn't even dreamed about doing. |
