Mission 0 - Pre-Sigma Iotia II

There were many advantages to being a Captain, especially one who had been decorated during the Earth-Romulan war. One of them was that you got to pick your own crew. Certainly, there were many applicants and Gary went through them with a fine tooth comb. Any time there was a choice between equal applicants, Gary inevitably went with the best looking woman.
Horizon's crew was being changed over. Having already had a bad run in, Captain Alonis Cobaryn was turning over the reins to someone new, in this case, Captain Gary Alexander. Unlike his military days, Horizon was now being prepared for exploration. In the new era of peace and the new Federation, military might was not necessary, but gaining new territory and new information was. Gary did not care which he was doing. He just wanted to be back in space and put distance between him and his ex-wife, Adrina Elisa Monica Cochrane, who did not recognize that their relationship was over.
There was no doubt that Adrina was a lovely woman. She was beautiful and brilliant. However, she also had a rare mental illness that interfered with her judgment. No current medicine could cure Adrina and Gary could no longer tolerate the flare ups, so in 2164 they divorce. Of course, neither made each other's lives easier as Gary and Adrina still hooked up. There was just too much chemistry to ignore. However, with Horizon, he was determined to finally cut that cord. Five years away should do it, no? And surrounding himself with beautiful women could not hurt either.
Gary also was pleased that he got to command a Daedalus class starship. He always was more than a little amused at the phallic shape and wondered if that was done purposely. Clearly, some engineer, like himself, had a sense of humor. How Starfleet missed it was beyond him. However, he never claimed that Admirals were particularly bright.
He stroked the Captain's chair and sat down in it. Surely someone would come to meet him soon. Launch would be a traditional July 4 launch and he was anxious to meet his new crew. Perhaps someone would even make it to his chambers this evening. After all, a launch or two or ten before the launch of Legacy would never been turned down.
