809 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Mission 1 - Leaving Sigma Iotia II
Location: Somewhere in the Pinwheel Galaxy
Timeline: 2168/07/25 2100

Hours passed. The pink mists thinned. Readings were now possible and data started streaming into Horizon's computers. Before the crew stretched vast space and stars.

Gary asked, "Where are we, Perlit? KAT, get this all down, please."

Acknowledging the Captain's request with a nod, she continued logging. Mostly because she didn't trust her voice from betraying her state of mind. Her throat was dry, hands clammy, and the pen was getting a little slick in her grip. She quickly scanned the Bridge and slid the Stylus along her skirt to dry it without anyone noticing.

She might have been pale beneath the foundation she applied every morning, but there were much more important things happening to worry about her coloring.

Finally able to get a clear reading, Ciara pulled all the power she could without compromising other systems and ran a full sensor scan. "Um..Captain?" She re-ran the scans just in case, but there was no way, was there?"

"Yes, Lieutenant?" he asked Perlit.

Turning to look over at the Captain, Ciara didn't quite know how to put it, "We...the sensors can't even tell where we are. But we are no where near home. There are no ways at all to contact Starfleet, even if we wanted. I...can't tell where we are at all."

"There has to be a way. Refer to the star charts, Perlit."

"Captain, you don't understand, I have used the star charts. I can't figure out where we are!"

"Get some help, then," Gary answered irritably. "Extrapolate."

Ci swore under her breath in French a few times and grumbled. "Who wants to help me figure this damned thing out?!"

After a bit more time, Ciara swore again. "Captain, I don't know how this iz possible. But," she looked back to him, "We are in ze Pinwheel Galaxy..."

"Pinwheel galaxy? But that's.... What? 20 million light years away?" Gary asked with an awed voice.

"I triple-checked before I reported it, Captain."

"Check it again." He paused enough to make sure that his order was understood. "Manually." He gave a distinctive pause again before continuing, "I want to make sure that there is no equipment malfunction."

Giving just a small eye roll, Ciara turned back and setup for manual scanning. This was going to take a bit longer, but if that's what he wanted to confirm where they were, she'd do it.

KAT's mouth opened in surprise and then shut promptly, but her eyes remained wide. Pinwheel... Galaxy... she glanced over at the readings and realized that somehow, in some way, she was inadvertently part of a much more involved mission than originally planned.

What... what might this mean to everyone? To KAT? To the Ship? She was called back to the present by the Captain's voice.

Taking control of himself and the situation, Gary asked, "Flowers, can you get any chatter or communications out there?"

"Widening the monitoring systems to include all frequencies," Flowers responded. "Nothing as of yet, Captain, I'll let you know."

Super and sub sonics, all things audible and outside human hearing range. They were somewhere else... no telling what might be out there. A small smile started like an inner light in her eyes as she dove into the ranges like a conductor with a symphony.

"Armory, Engineering, Helm ... I need reports on our current abilities, now."

Nick’s voice came across the comm system. “Bridge, engineering. Repairs are proceeding apace and we’ll have the warp core online in about eight hours. Hayes and I are about to go into the port nacelle to repair buckling in the warp coils.”

"Helm is still functioning," Alex answered, "as soon as we know where we need to be going." She looked over at Ciara a second at that. Where could they go?

Bullock tapped away at her console before speaking, "Captain shields are fully recharged, phasers are at 18% and charging, torpedos have enough charge to fire two torpedoes at most, but they to are recharging. Should have weapons fully restored in the next twenty to thirty minutes sir. All security teams have reported in and no intruders reported aboard."

Ciara looked over to Alex, "I...am not sure. This time it is up to the Captain," she turned her eyes to Gary.

"Right now, fly us straight. IT is away from the pink. A nebula, perhaps? Perlit, search for anything out there. I want information on all planets, stars, and any other body out there. Flowers, I want any signs of any signals reported to me immediately.

Looking out the viewscreen, then back to Gary, Ci nodded and turned and started up the scans. How in the hell had they gotten there?

"Aye, captain. Dead ahead," Alex said as she continued on course. Her expression was somber but calm as she worked her controls, her focus on her work.
